Mcwane Science Center Trip
“I’m really glad we rode the bus, because that’s something I didn’t know that I could do by myself. Now I feel like I could ride the bus if I needed to get somewhere, and it’s so much cheaper than Uber!”
~Wilhelm, ourHOME Member
Did you know that Birmingham has a bus that runs directly from downtown Homewood to downtown Birmingham, including the BJCC? It’s called the Magic City Connector, and it is safe, clean, and only costs $0.30 per ride! This is a great resource to help increase INDEPENDENCE for our members, whether to increase job opportunities, or just to see a show at the BJCC.
ourHOME Members recently met up in Homewood to take the bus downtown to get lunch together at the Pizitz Food Hall and visit the Mcwane Science Center. At the McWane Center we got to meet with Jaxon, their volunteer coordinator to talk about ways to get involved at the McWane for those who are interested. Then we caught a really cool, immersive Blue Angels documentary at the IMAX Dome. Most of the flight scenes were filmed from inside the cockpit! As you’ll see in the pictures, it really left an impression!
Next, we went upstairs to the STEM area, where we had so much fun that we got stuck! Our Members banded together to build an amazing vehicle they variously dubbed “The Contraption,” “The Havoc,” and “The Vehicle.” It was so cool how they all came together to work on building a really complicated vehicle, and how each person fell into their own role in the project. All the kids were wildly impressed by how big we were able to make it, and that it actually rolled!
Until next time!
